The Importance of Using the Correct Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
In any workplace, Health & safety should always be on the agenda. Although PPE is at the bottom of the hierarchy of control it can still be an effective ways to protect yourself and others. Whether you're on a construction site, in a laboratory, or working in a manufacturing plant, using the appropriate PPE can prevent injuries, illnesses, and even fatalities.
Why PPE Matters
PPE serves as the last line of defence against workplace hazards, including chemical exposure, falling objects, loud noises, and airborne particles. When used correctly, it significantly reduces the risk of harm and helps create a safer work environment.
Choosing the Right PPE
Selecting the right PPE depends on the nature of the work and associated risks. Some key considerations include:
• Head Protection: Hard hats prevent injuries from falling objects and impact.
• Eye & Face Protection: Safety goggles and face shields guard against chemical splashes, flying debris, and risks when welding and cutting.
• Hearing Protection: Earplugs or ear defenders help reduce the risk of noise-related hearing loss.
• Respiratory Protection: Masks and respirators protect against inhaling harmful dust, fumes, and vapours.
• Hand Protection: Gloves safeguard against cuts, burns, chemicals, and infections.
• Foot Protection: Steel-toe boots and non-slip footwear prevent foot injuries, slips and falls.
• Body Protection: Coveralls, high-visibility vests, and aprons provide protection against environmental hazards and can increase visibility.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even when PPE is provided, improper use can still put workers at risk. Here are some common mistakes to watch out for:
• Using damaged or expired PPE.
• Wearing PPE incorrectly (e.g., loose-fitting masks, improperly fastened helmets).
• Neglecting to replace disposable PPE when necessary.
• Assuming PPE alone is enough—other safety measures should still be in place.
• In-Correct sizing of PPE for body sizing and shapes
• Ill fitting and incompatible PPE
• Ensure there are the correct storage facilities available.
Provision of PPE
Employers must ensure that PPE is readily available, regularly maintained, and that employees receive proper training on its use. Where contractors are utilised they should also be considered when selecting and purchasing PPE. Workers should also take personal responsibility for wearing PPE consistently and reporting any defects or concerns.
Do you know what levels of noise, dust your team are working in, have you reviewed your traffic management surveys, have you recently reviewed your COSHH assessments, all of these can affect your PPE requirement?
